Loved ones whose relatives laid to rest in graves at risk from coastal erosion say that indecision on how best to address the problem is creating unnecessary distress concerning the eternal homes of their loved ones.

An Impending Threat to Historic Graveyards

Local authorities have singled out three burial grounds in the communities of Happisburgh, Trimingham, and Mundesley as being at risk of being swallowed by the sea in the coming decades.

A newly published study on the issue details a range of options, from doing nothing to disinterring bodies and reburying them in more secure locations. Officials maintain it is for local people to decide how to proceed.

“Right now we’re in limbo. It causes me distress. They wanted this to serve as their final resting place, but it isn’t going to be because of the encroaching sea.”

Projections suggest at least part of one graveyard could fall into the sea in the next 80 years, but some residents worry it will happen far earlier. “In my view it’s got under 20 years, if you consider what’s occurred in the last 30 years,” a farmer stated.

Haunted by the Ghosts of Eccles

A local business owner recalled a school trip to the nearby settlement of Eccles, which has largely disappeared into the sea, including its church and graveyard.

“You could see human remains,” she said. “Certain people hold this idealized notion that people’s remains will just get carried away to the ocean. They won’t. Individuals will take bones as mementos and go grave robbing in search of valuables. That is completely disrespectful.”

“I’m worried that the same thing that happened at Eccles will happen at Happisburgh and there’ll be skeletons on the shore. I would feel appalled by that.”

A Soldier's Grave in Peril

Further up the coast is situated the grave of a ex-soldier who died while serving abroad. His mother expressed she could not sleep after discovering her son’s final plot might one day be moved.

“It truly disturb me to consider this may not remain his permanent resting place,” she said. “To our family it’s an significant place to go.”

She believes, new interments should cease but says it is premature to disturb current plots. “My preference for now is to take no action and watch carefully, but an early decision needs to be made when a tipping point has been attained.”

Searching for Answers and Certainty

The lack of consensus over when and how to handle the problem has left grieving relatives feeling exasperated and worried.

Several families are calling for more coastal protections to delay the inevitable erosion and to allow burials to continue for now. Different voices contend the time for moving graves is drawing near.

“It is very emotive,” a family member stated. “The council’s report was really good, but now there’s uncertainty about how it is taken forward. And everybody is avoiding responsibility over who is accountable.”

A coastal manager said the burial sites were under the care of the church authorities. “Ultimately it is down to them to choose the direction to take. Our role is here to assist them through that journey with residents.”

It was also stated there was ample time to weigh all the choices. “This concerns many years before it begins getting lost.”

“There is no common view on what should happen yet. We need productive community discussions to discover the appropriate answers for each community.”

The prospect of losing the churches and graveyards was labeled one of “immense sadness for the local community,” but faith leaders also spoke of a doctrine in resurrection, offering a spiritual perspective on the physical disappearance of sacred ground.
